Welcome to the SCN website!

The main goal of the Sustainable Communities Network is to identify and develop effective interventions and key research priorities to address health inequalities in Australia’s rural, remote and Indigenous communities that are based on sustainability.

The SCN is an opportunity for you, the interested researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and community representatives to be involved and an opportunity for you to have a voice on these issues at a policy and research level. These interventions and research priorities will be finalised by the beginning of 2004 and will be presented to the Health Inequalities Research Collaboration of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

Those who become part of SCN will together determine its shape and direction and will be involved in identifying and developing the key interventions and research priorities. Specifically we now know, to a large degree, the nature and extent of health inequalities in rural, remote and Indigenous communities. What we need to know is what interventions work to make a community sustainable and that address health inequalities in the process, and the evidence for these interventions. Where interventions are not developed or identified research priorities will be defined and justified.
